Nurturing a Healthy Mind

Nurturing a healthy mind can promote peace, happiness, and wellbeing. We can encourage a healthy mind by cultivating positive mental and emotional states, practicing meditation, and practicing loving-kindness and compassion toward ourselves and others.

To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. –Buddha

Practicing meditation can help us to promote a healthy mind by supporting us in staying in the present moment. When we are grounded in the present moment, we are free from regret about the past, worry about the future, and other mental habits that create our suffering.

Taking care of the body through eating healthy foods, drinking adequate amounts of water, getting adequate sleep, and practicing relaxation, can also support the development of a healthy mind. We all have some agency in our sense of wellbeing. If you feel you do not have a healthy mental state, what can you do to cultivate one?

Let go of the striving for perfection, judgment, and critical thoughts directed inward. What is called for is mindful self-care, delivered with love and compassion. Just for today, commit to begin one new habit of self-care to support the well-being of your body and mind.
