We can increase willpower with meditation practice. Two of the most powerful things that you can do to create change in your world are to get clear about your intentions and practice meditation.
If you can change your mind, you can change your life. –William James
Research shows that people who meditate have increased grey matter in the area of the brain that relates to impulse control and emotion regulation. Clarifying your intentions and reminding yourself of those intentions throughout the day can help to keep you focused on what matters most and can get you through the moments when your impulses try to take over. And you can put some space between your impulses and your actions by taking a one-minute time out to elongate the breath and slow your breathing to 4-6 breaths in that one-minute period.
As you meditate, you are creating an inner resource for resilience in difficult times. You are cultivating an inner still place of peace and security that you can turn to as a refuge in moments of uncertainty.
I encourage you to keep a meditation log or journal. Track your meditation practice so that you’re aware of how often you’re practicing, and then also remember to track the rewards that you experience as a result of your practice. See if you notice increase willpower as you practice. Tracking the rewards can also serve to keep you motivated to keep practicing!
