Coping with Uncertainty

How can we become more skillful at coping with uncertainty? Life is filled with uncertainties that most of us don’t even think about on a daily basis. Challenging world events have brought us face to face with a great deal of uncertainty.

Within each of us resides a still place that is a constant source of refuge.

Mindfulness for Coping with Uncertainty

How can we become more skillful at coping with uncertainty? By making effort in our mindfulness practice to maintain a balance between turning toward the discomfort that it evokes, balancing the discomfort with moments of joy, and knowing when and how to take refuge.

Within each of us resides a still place that is a constant source of refuge. Simply bringing our awareness to that can help us to connect with it. Turn your attention inward toward that still place inside of you, and rest your attention there for a few moments. What do you notice? What sensations and feelings arise as you connect with your inner still place? Where does this still place reside within your body?

If you’re having trouble connecting with your still place, try taking a deep breath in. Notice the still place in the space between the inhale and the exhale. Now breathe out, and notice the still place in the space between the exhale and the inhale. Rest your awareness on this still place for a few moments. Where do you sense this still place in your body?

Focused Attention

I’ve said it many times, but whatever we rest our attention on grows. If you rest your attention on the still place within, your sense of that place will grow—it will become more present and accessible to you as a refuge and a source of strength and resilience.
