Trusting Yourself to Know the Truth

Trusting yourself often feels difficult following experiences of stress, illness, loss, or trauma. Practicing mindfulness can support you in gradually trusting yourself again. Mindfulness practice allows you to gradually reconnect with awareness of your own sensations, feelings, and thoughts as you learn to listen inside to yourself again.

Making time and space for stillness allows us to listen deeply to ourselves. When we listen in silence, we know what is true. If we keep sitting still with the truth, it becomes even clearer.

Trusting yourself means living out what you already know to be true. –Cheryl Strayed

Our tendency is to see the truth, want it to be otherwise, and choose to ignore it or believe someone else’s truth or lie. Hold your truth in the silence. Look at it from all angles. Feel its texture. Notice its color and shape. Choose to see it clearly, and then choose to trust what you see. Hold onto that truth with all of your will and notice the desire to distort it in the interest of chasing a sense of ease or comfort. You may forfeit an immediate sense of gratification, but you just may have traded months or years of suffering for a sense of enduring peace.

Mindfulness coaching is in large part about guiding you back to trusting yourself. It’s a gradual process of teaching you how to listen deeply and pay attention to the language of your body, heart, and mind. It’s about learning how to discern intuition from fear. Recovering the capacity for trusting yourself again creates a foundation for a growing self awareness and capacity to make wise decisions that support and nurture your wellbeing and resilience.
