Coaching for Gifted Adults

Gifted, talented, and creative adults experience life differently. Your mind may move quickly, your curiosity and creativity pull you in many directions, and your emotions and sensitivities run deep. While these traits can be a source of insight and joy, they can also bring stress, overwhelm, perfectionism, and feelings of isolation.

Gifted adults need multiple sources of stimulation, safe spaces to be fully themselves, and relationships where they are understood, respected, and valued. They need to understand their own gifts and needs, and to develop ways to express their abilities meaningfully while maintaining emotional, social, and intellectual balance.

Jen Johnson is a licensed mental health counselor and board certified coach. She offers an integrative mind-body approach to coaching for gifted adults that incorporates mindfulness, creativity, and health and wellness approaches.

Understanding the Concerns of Gifted Adults

Gifted adults often face challenges that are distinct from others, including:

  • Difficulty making decisions due to many possibilities, ethical considerations, or fear of disappointing others
  • Perfectionism, self-criticism, and Imposter Syndrome
  • High expectations and pressure to excel in work, creativity, or life
  • Intensely felt emotions and sensitivities
  • Challenges with self-care, boundaries, and saying no
  • Loneliness and feeling “different” from peers
  • Crisis of meaning or existential questioning, which can impact fulfillment
  • Balancing excellence, wholeness, and personal fulfillment without burnout

Understanding these concerns is the first step in creating strategies that honor your strengths while addressing the stress, isolation, and overwhelm that gifted adults often experience.

How Coaching & Therapy Supports Gifted Adults

Working together, we focus on:

  • Self-understanding: Identifying your traits, sensitivities, and talents, and understanding how they shape your life
  • Self-acceptance: Recognizing that your perceptions, intuitions, and experiences are real and meaningful
  • Self-compassion: Learn how to maximize healthy perfectionism, release unhealthy perfectionism, make peace with your inner critic, and treat yourself with kindness (you can be kind to yourself AND be a high achiever)
  • Emotional and cognitive navigation: Developing strategies for perfectionism, decision-making, and managing high-intensity thinking and feelings
  • Relationship skills: Communicating clearly, setting boundaries, and connecting with peers who share similar gifts
  • Creative and professional growth: Translating gifts into meaningful work, projects, or personal expression
  • Create an Inspired and Meaningful Life: Building sustainable practices for intellectual, creative, social, and emotional growth

This work helps gifted adults feel seen, understood, and supported, freeing them to engage their talents fully while living with steadiness, clarity, and fulfillment.
