A wild mind can feel like a runaway train — filled with racing thoughts, ruminating thoughts, or anxious thoughts. Mindfulness is about learning to notice when we have left presence and then training the mind to return to the present moment over and over again.
When left to its own accord, the mind typically engages in commentary about present moment experience, usually criticism, ruminates about the past and worries about the future, or compares ourselves to others. These mental processes are a source of suffering and stress and reinforce a sense of dissatisfaction.
We can begin to untangle from these habitual patterns by practicing noticing, without judgment, when we have left the present moment and bringing ourselves back by turning our attention toward the breath. Tame your wild mind with mindfulness.
