Embracing Uncertainty with Meditation Practice

Embracing uncertainty can bring us a greater sense of peace and resilience. When uncertainty comes—in the form of waiting for test results, waiting to know the next right step to take, trying to decide which path or choice feels best for us—how can we stay present with ourselves, meeting each moment as it arises?

Our impulse may be to automatically try to reroute toward impatience, demanding an answer, or hopelessness, preparing for the worst. If we maintain a sense of clear vision of each present moment, we can choose to stay with ourselves with compassion, noticing the coming and going of each inhale and each exhale, meeting each wave of feeling with an open heart, being aware of what we feel, where we feel it in the body, and the quality of each impermanent sensation and feeling.

This is our practice, over and over again. Each unfolding moment brings uncertainty and an opportunity to meet whatever arises with clear vision and an open heart.

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.
