Practicing Compassion is Good for Your Mental Health

Being compassionate is good for your mental health. Embodying compassion involves recognizing our sense of shared humanity and extending kindness toward ourselves and others. It is always easier to label, judge or diagnose than to see beyond the habitual pattern of our judging mind to the humanity of another person or ourselves. The human mind at rest by nature engages in commentary about present moment experience, and it is usually critical.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. —Mother Teresa

So yes, it is human nature for the mind to judge others. Yet this tendency only leads to separateness and either feelings of superiority or feelings of self-loathing, which increases suffering. As with most habitual patterns, we can change this by bringing mindfulness/awareness to the habit, connecting with a sense of shared humanity, and extending kindness to ourselves and others. When we are being compassionate and meeting ourselves with kindness, we are more capable of meeting others with kindness and compassion. This supports our wellbeing and mental health and helps us to be more resilient.

Please consider being compassionate and extending lovingkindness to everyone you encounter, today and everyday. Everyone is struggling with something. It may be helpful to remind yourself that all beings long to be happy and at peace. People are not their anger, their unkind words or deeds. Beneath the surface, we are all the same, all of us human beings longing to be happy and at peace.
