Feeling at Home: Finding the Still Place with Meditation

There is an opportunity for feeling at home when we are simply being in the present moment, the attention anchored on the breath or any other expression of present moment experience. Many of us search for peace outside of ourselves before realizing that it is accessible to us in any moment by practicing mindfulness and meditation.

“Perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition“. –James Baldwin

Within each of us there is a still place. This still place exists inside of us in every moment, whether we are feeling anxious or at ease. Most of us can find it in the center of the chest, or the heart space. If you have difficulty locating it, try taking a slow, deep breath and noticing the still place at the top of the inhale. Breathe out slowly, and notice the still place at the bottom of the exhale.

We can create a life that supports the experience of feeling at home with ourselves by cultivating a daily meditation practice and mindfulness practice, doing work that we love, being close to people who treat us with kindness, making what matters most a priority, and engaging in creative expression and connecting with nature.  When we stay true to these practices, we living in the moment, aware of and finding refuge in the breath, and being at home.

Warmly,

Jen
